AI breakthroughs in robotics won’t change your life any time soon

I spend my days split between maintaining university web systems and learning more about AI, so I see both sides of the hype cycle pretty clearly. This article is a good reality check on humanoid robots.

We have all seen the viral videos of robots dancing or doing backflips. What this piece does well is explain the gap between a cool demo and a robot that can reliably do useful work in your home or workplace. Software is one piece, but the hardware problems (power, actuators, sensing, cost, safety) are just as hard, and they do not move at software speed.

It is a useful reminder as I think about AI projects at work too. A flashy demo is not the same as something that holds up in a messy, inconsistent real-world environment with real users. The last 20 percent (reliability, edge cases, maintenance) is usually where the real effort goes, in robotics or in any applied AI project.

Worth a read if you want a grounded take instead of another "robots are coming for your job next year" headline.
